  • Description

Sadie and Ben are in love, and although Ben suggests getting married in the Caribbean, Sadie has her heart set on a wedding at the family church, St. Augustine's. Ben says sure, and they meet with the pastor, Rev. Frank. The only date open for two years is three weeks away, and Frank insists the kids go through his marriage prep course. They're to write their own vows; he also demands chastity, bugs their apartment, initiates arguments, has them care for robot twins, creates friction between Ben and her family, and raises doubts in Sadie. Desperate, Ben looks for dirt on Frank. Can he undermine Frank's authority and keep Sadie's heart?

"License to Wed" presents a by the numbers romantic comedy about a couple who endure a gruelingly awkward preparation process in preparation for their marriage by an off the wall reverend played by Robin Williams. Lead by Williams as well as Mandy Moore and John Krasinski, this film should have an easy time understanding what exactly it is and how to have fun with the audience. Interestingly though, the film begins quite promising with some genuine laughs as the characters are introduced and the plot is presented. However, the story spirals into one terribly executed gag after another until somewhere around the middle, it becomes frankly unwatchable. Wasting Robin William's talent might be the most serious offense the film takes. Considering how impossible that seems but even he doesn't seem to be enjoying himself after the second scene. Each charismatic actor are not only underutilized in their roles, but are given such unbelievable situations to work in everyone ends up looking bad. With every line of unbelievable dialogue and awkwardly outrageous coming plot point, it becomes quickly apparent there's no escaping the dark pit this film falls into. Every possible complaint given to the film originates in the film's script and direction. Both of which are often the most valuable factors in a film's quality and can turn the most talented actors into unlikeable screen presence. Despite the failure of the writing and direction, "License to Wed" is guilty of other technical incompetencies. The film's poorly constructed together with some obvious editing choices that make you wonder if this would've made a better Hallmark movie. Sound design and recording are not anything to be seriously concerned about but each cut seems to feel so splashed together it wouldn't be a surprise if the final cut was the first rough cut. Other aesthetic choices feel boring and generic which only decreases any potential the movie has for feeling remotely fresh. All in all, "License to Wed" is not only poorly done, but an incredibly unwatchable, unfunny, and unintelligent comedy that tries so hard to be uncomfortable and weird that it succeeds to the detriment of the film. It's painfully unpleasant to watch and definitely not something anyone should waste their money or time with.

1/7/18. Maybe 2 1/2 stars. An ok chick flick in which a couple gets tested by a minister for marriage readiness. It's cute and Krasinski and Moore have the chemistry that makes this work. Williams was good, but a bit stiff as the minister. The movie does cover the basics about what makes a relationship work, so that's your object lesson for the day.

***** spoilers****Typical anti-Christian secular film which I find odd since Robin Williams is supposed to represent a man of the cloth.Spoiler**** After he causes physical injury to the groom to be, he and his mini-me pretend to heal him by performing an exorcism of sorts.**** I still tried to watch due to a few cute or witty comments, but it was like watching a train wreck. Horrible but you don't want to look away for some reason. Way too blasphemous for me personally by making Christians look evil, as is so popular now. Also, not a fan of many current writers who don't seem to get what actual comedy is. They seem to think insults, defiling, and assaults are humorous. I pray they begin making films for intelligent folk again.*Spoiler*And the bashing the fake baby in the store reinforces what many consider as open hostility towards children in general.**** Hollywood appears to have gotten some click of very unfunny, untalented people.

This movie was a bit of a bore. I walked in rather neutral with my expectations, and after the first 10 minutes realized that this ball of cheese was not for me. I sat through it all, for the sake of the company I was with.Mandy Moore and John Krasinski are cute, but very flat characters. There is little or no character development in this film. Robin Williams as Reverend Frank tries to save the show with his humorous antics, but was unfortunately cliché in his attempts. The little boy, Josh Flitter, does an excellent job as the annoyingly forthright "minister in training", as do the other children playing minor roles, but the overall attempt was bland. The movie neither humorously avoids morals, nor does it end with moral enlightenment. The "lesson" in the end is weak and predictable. If you're looking for something heartwarming, inspiring, or thought-provoking, turn elsewhere. If you'd like a few cheap laughs with a weak storyline, this could be your film.I rate it a 2 out of 10.
